Preventive Care: Prophylaxis or Teeth Cleaning
Prophylaxis is a routine cleaning of the primary and permanent teeth of a patient whose gums are in normal healthy condition, with no periodontal disease present.
Prophylaxis is a preventive treatment, and is intended only for patients with no history of periodontal treatment or signs of periodontal disease. It includes the removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) from the crown of the tooth above, and/or sometimes slightly below the gum line. The teeth are also polished. Topical fluoride treatment is usually applied at the end of each preventive visit, to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay.
